DIY Valentine’s Fabric Wreath

Despite being an inconsistent blogger lately, it’s crossed my mind on several occasions to crave out a few minutes of time to post something new. Life has been full and I’ve not put much attention to this website in a while, but I miss writing and sharing.

One thing that fills me with joy is using my creativity, whether it be through writing, hand-lettering/calligraphy, baking in the kitchen, doing crafts with my boys, or creating things for around the home. And I want this spot to be a little reflection of that.

I’ve mainly used to space to write faith-filled encouragement particularly for women, and it’s still my plan to do so, but I also want to occasionally add touches of other creativity.

So today, I’m doing just that by sharing a do-it-yourself project!

I made my first ever ribbon wreath when I was newly married and since then I’ve made a few more, but this time I used a combination of fabric and a little ribbon.

It might just be one of my favorite wreaths I’ve made! Perhaps it’s because it contains my two favorite colors, white and pink, or it’s just the freshness of something new.

You’ll need only a few supplies for this wreath:

  • foam wreath (mine is a 12 inch)
  • fabric or ribbon cut into strips
  • good pair of scissors

I purchased this foam wreath to make a Christmas wreath at the end of last year, but I never got around it. My boys liked to think it was toy and my toddler might have bitten into it a few times as you can see, so I figured it was time to put it to proper use.

Ribbon is a little less time consuming to work with, but you need about 50 yards of it for a project like this and I can usually only find big spools of ribbon on sale around the holidays. So I used 10 yards of pink plaid ribbon, and two yards of fabric in pale pink and a pale red/white pattern. And I had some leftover fabric to spare.

I cut the ribbon into strips about 13 inches long, and I cut the fabric into strips about one inch wide by 13 inches long. I wasn’t super exact in cutting because once you start adding fabric to the wreath, you won’t notice. But you’ll want to adjust depending on the thickness of your foam form and your overall visual preference.

Once everything is cut, then you’re ready to start doing a lot of tying!

You simply loop the fabric around the foam, tie it once, and then tie it again to make sure it’s secure. I alternated my fabric in a pattern, but there is no right or wrong with this part. I trimmed the ends as needed to even things up.

The fabric will fray a little bit, but I personally think it gives softness and a unique flare to the wreath. I’ve used wire-edged ribbon in the past for wreaths like this and you can do that if you want something stiffer you can better control, but I was pleasantly surprised at how this turned out with regular ribbon and fabric.

You’ll want to make sure to squish the ribbon pieces together as you go to close up any gaps.

And you’ll want to add a little loop for hanging it before you start tying fabric on. If you forget, you can easily do that at the end too.

After all the cutting and tying (I promise it’s worth it), you’ll have a pretty wreath to add a touch of love to your front door or anywhere else around the home.

If you decide to make a wreath of your own, I’d love to hear how it turns out! The one I made is currently hanging on our front door as a welcoming and festive touch.

I thought I’d also take a minute to remind us all of the incredible gift of love we’ve been given.

For God so loved the world that He gave…as John 3:16 tells us.

You are deeply loved by Jesus, the Risen Savior, who hung on the cross and defeated death once and for all because His very heartbeat is love.

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. ~John 15:13
