The God Who Never Stops Loving Us

It was honey to my ears the first time my three-year-old tenderly exclaimed, “I’ll never stop loving you.” He offers this token of affection at random times throughout the day, blessing my mama heart time and again.

As the Lord creatively does, He uses motherhood to point me back to the truth as I go about my day cleaning up messes and preparing activities and making meals. The truth that HE loves me and that no matter what—He’ll never stop loving me.

It’s also the central message that saturates Holy Week, as we remember the greatest love story recorded in history.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” ~ John 3:16

Crucifixion was reserved for the worst of criminals. Yet an innocent King hung on the cross, giving us hope of a reconciled relationship with our Creator and an eternity in His presence. Jesus, in all humility, did for us that which we cannot do for ourselves. A perfect sacrifice was needed and a perfect sacrifice He gave.

Why?

Because God is Love.

Because after He created man in His image, He said His creation was good—very good.

Because while sin changed the story, it didn’t change God’s love for us.

Because sin doesn’t have the power to defeat God’s love.

But God’s love has the power to defeat death and secure the victory we celebrate on Resurrection Sunday.

He never stops loving us.

At our best. At our worst. In the valley. Or standing atop a mountain. His love is steadfast. It’s secure. It’s certain. It never quits.

Once we’ve encountered this type of love, change follows. Day by day, His Spirit in us conforms us more into His likeness. And while our good deeds have no power to save us, they are simply the fruit of a life transformed by a Savior willing to die in our place.

Every time my little boy strings together those five precious words, it’s like hearing them for the very first time. Those words never lose their sweetness, and neither does the Father’s unending love for us.
